We’ve had a wonderful trip these last three weeks. I skiied in South Korea, and in Bali I hiked, surfed, and waterslid at Bali’s WaterBom waterpark on Christmas Day. We didn’t bring cell phones and were delighted to never know what time it was, which sounds nice in theory but may have accounted for why we ate seven meals each day. We head back to Shanghai in a few hours. My wife has enjoyed her vacation but she’s ready to go home since there’s only so many weeks of not waking up at 6:30AM her body can take before she gets cranky. And without Shanghai’s freezing weather and lack of insulation, we find we’ve run out of things to complain about and our relationship is suffering as a result.
The kids have had an amazing vacation full of swimming, surfing, water-sliding, hiking, and pointing out the obvious. If only I had counted the times The Fonz said, “Hey, Dad, do you see that monkey?” while we were at the Monkey Forest Sanctuary. Actually, I didn’t need to count because The Fonz counted for me. “Dad, do you see that monkey? That’s the thirty-third monkey I’ve seen. Dad, do you see that monkey behind the thirty-third monkey? That’s the thirty-fourth monkey I’ve seen.” When we got to the fortieth monkey, I regretted pulling him away from the swimming pool.
Here’s a picture of the kids practicing freezing for when they get back to Shanghai’s arctic weather:
Optimist Prime wanted to take one last breath of Bali air and see if he could hold it until we reached Shanghai:
The kids did fit in some reading by the side of the pool:
It wasn’t all fun. One of my New Year’s resolutions was to learn how to fold clothing as well as they do at clothing stores. One reader posted a video demonstrating how to fold a shirt in two seconds. And it wasn’t just any reader–it was my dad. Stop trying to run my life, Dad! We spent some time watching the video and practicing one morning and I was pretty impressed with the job Optimist Prime did with his suitcase:
That tuxedo t-shirt is usually reserved for special occasions but he did wear it on a hike in Ubud when all his other clothes were dirty, and he was certainly the classiest ten-year-old on the mountain.
The part of the trip I’m most excited about is that when my kids grow up they’ll remember their parents tried to bring them up with some culture as evidenced by all the exotic places they’ve watched TV.
Here are the kids in Seoul, South Korea:
The kids enjoying the beautiful port city, Incheon:
The kids on the electric streets of Seoul:
At our beachfront hotel in Nusa Dua, Bali–the views were amazing:
Our bungalow in the mountains of Ubud, Bali:
Our last hotel on the beach at Seminyak–the sunsets were incredible:
It can be hard to get kids to pause and appreciate the beauty around them, and I finally found a way to make them stop and enjoy the sunset:

I have not been to Bali in the last three weeks. I have been to the grocery store and the dermatologist. I have been there in spirit, though. To return the favor, you should be with me in spirit at Meijers. It’s only fair.

We didn’t make it to a dermatologist but we did see a doctor about a skin rash possibly induced by the tropical climate.

I don’t think I’ve ever made this comment on your blog before: Great photos! Have a good transition back to reality, which, uh, in your case, isn’t really quite reality.

It’s going to be difficult to transition back to regular life. We’re going to allow ourselves a couple weeks to lead our old lives as half-heartedly as possible.

Ha! I’ve tried teaching him. He’s slowly getting better. I really like that cardboard TV pic.

What a fantastic trip you guys had! Way to go Fonz on the monkey-spotting, and OP with the clothes-folding. All of your pictures are priceless. That last photo has got to be the funniest thing I have seen in a long time. I will have to remember to make myself a little TV frame for our upcoming trip to Disney this year. You should market those, I bet they’d sell like hotcakes. Kids could use them in school and would actually pay attention to the teacher. Or at dinner when I am asking them how their day went. I might even get some answers!

I’m going to start wearing that TV around my face at the dinner table to see if the kids start paying more attention to what I say.

So glad you had such a great trip, and may you and your wife find plenty of new things to complain about when you return home! Also, I’m very impressed by the last picture; most kids I know won’t stand for black and white TV.

You can tell the channel selection was pretty limited if they were willing to watch a sunset in black and white.

From all of your wonderful photos, I feel like I’ve really experienced he rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of these places. Bali? Check. South Korea? Check.
Glad the Greatsbys had a fabulous vacation!

They are kinda close to the tv in that last shot. They’re probably getting radiation.

Oh my gosh that last shot is brilliant! I hope you frame that one, GG. The whole blog was great, but truly – the grand finale was the last photo. Priceless!

And here I was all excited for you when I started reading the post, thinking you had finally managed to get some pictures of your kids whilst NOT watching TV, and then reality set in. Obviously they will keep those memories of the beautiful vistas seen within that metal box while on vacation with their family for a lifetime. Good for you for subjecting, um I mean, exposing them to the beauty of those other exotic places!

The fact that your kids read Archie comics makes them about the coolest kids on the planet. I read them when I was young as well. Also, when I was a bit older. And, I kind of still read them.
In fact, I have one in my hands right now. Somehow, you don’t look as cool reading them when you’re my age…

My mom always bought Archie comics for vacations so I bought myself one for this trip. Unfortunately the kids dominated the comic the whole trip and I never got to the end to find out whether Archie chose Betty or Veronica.

Ah man that was rich… Last picture was great. Lesson I learned from this (thank you) was that traveling is obsolete given today’s technology.

Great you made a TV…do your kids ever question any orders you give?
The Good Greatsby

Not yet. There may come a time when they get tired of sitting in the rain while their dad tells them to lift a cardboard TV higher.

I’ll bet it was murder getting them to jump into the pool over and over and over until you got the shot just right. I commend them for their obedience !

Thank God your kids are typical about SOMETHING. But if you can making folding laundry fun and your kid wears a tuxedo shirt to hike a mountain in Ubud, you’re doing it right. Safe travels home. I trust the kids have mini-DVD players for the flight.

LOL… does that fake TV have actual dials on it? Have your kids ever seen a TV with dials on it? 🙂
The Good Greatsby

It actually had an antennae in earlier versions as well but the wind kept blowing the antennas forward. I doubt they’ve seen an antennae either.

I wish I could find a tv with a “dial” on it….I hate the remote/remotes….to many and they all work differently! Someone PLEASE just give me a TV with a dial on it again! I know I know, I sound OLD saying that…but whatever!
Great post and humor as usual! Your kids are lucky and will have rich stories to share!

Remotes sure have a lot of buttons for how few I actually use. I just need a power button, channels, and volume.

Loved the blog entry, as always. Your understated sarcasm is an art form.
As for the makeshift TV, though…. are you showing your age a bit? Aren’t those KNOBS on it? I thought I was the only dinosaur left who remembered turning knobs !!!
If you ever take the kids to somewhere without a TV (which is the ultimate punishment, right?), perhaps you could pack them an ETCH a SKETCH !! It has knobs, too.
The Good Greatsby
January 8, 2012
My wife actually did bring an Etch-a-Sketch for them.

The water-splashed shot of your son is pretty incredible. I am properly impressed by your familys exotic TV-watching Tour. And T-shirt folding expertise. It’s inspired me to aquire some new, exotic pets; which is code for, in 2012, I will watch more Animal Planet shows 😀

Aww, this is so sweet. I’m impressed with the contents of OP’s suitcase. Love the tux. Your pool pictures are fun. I love the one with the splash of water, where you can clearly see each droplet–you should ask the kids to count them. Thank heavens, there was ample opportunity to watch TV. Hope you enjoyed it as much as the boys did.
